“Sacred Spaces in the Mediterranean Region”
The event is organized as a continuation of the international architectural competition
Matita d’Oro del Mediterraneo,
following the award ceremony held in October in Agrigento, Sicily.
Its main objective is to foster dialogue on the architectural, cultural, and spiritual role of sacred spaces in the Mediterranean region, through academic discussion, professional exchange, and cultural experiences.
Event Structure – Three-Day Program
Day 1 – Scientific Conference
- Welcome addresses by representatives of institutional and professional bodies
- 5–7 keynote lectures focusing on:
- Studies of sacred spaces in the Mediterranean
- Contemporary architectural approaches
- Presentation of awarded projects from the competition
- Official reception at the Technical Chamber of Greece / Central Macedonia
- Guided city tour:
- Byzantine and Ottoman monuments
- Thematic guided visit by specialized experts
Day 2 – UMAR Council Meeting
- UMAR Council Meeting
- Hybrid format (on-site and online participation)
- Lunch at Thessaloniki’s waterfront
Day 3 – Cultural Excursion
- Transfer to Halkidiki
- Boat cruise around Mount Athos
- Lunch and return to Thessaloniki
Parallel Activities
- Exhibition of the awarded projects of Matita d’Oro del Mediterraneo
- Presentation of selected architectural works related to sacred spaces
- Networking and international exchange opportunities
